1984: The curtain came down on a disappointing season for Villa, with no European qualification and tenth place in the league. Ipswich beat them 2-1 at Portman Rd in what was to be Tony Barton's last league match in charge.

1987: A Villa move to appoint Arthur Cox and Roy McFarland was rejected by Derby County. Villa were now expected to switch their attentions to Watford boss Graham Taylor.

FA Cup-winning captain Johnny Dixon signed off his 17-year Villa playing career with a goal in a 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in 1961. Dixon netted 144 goals in 430 senior appearances. Charlie Aitken made his debut that day and went on to play 660 games for Villa over the next 15 years, scoring 16 goals.
