Big John Carew signed for Villa in January 2007 in an exchange deal with Milan Baros.

He had enjoyed a long road to Villa Park as he excelled at a host of clubs, in a host of countries.

His career began with Lorenskog IF, but the man mountain quickly climbed the ladder of Norwegian football, moving to Valerenga IF in 1997, then Rosenborg BK in 1999.

His form then attracted Valencia and his time in Spain was not without its highlights.

Carew scored 14 league goals in his first season - and the winner against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. He also played in the final defeat against Bayern Munich.

He then joined AS Roma on loan in 2003 before a move to Besiktas the following season revitalised his career. He scored 13 league goals and this persuaded Gerard Houllier to spend £7.7m to bring him to the Stade Gerland with Lyon.

He made an immediate impact, scoring a hat-trick as the Lyon defeated AJ Auxerre to win the French Super Cup and then four goals in his first five league games.

The Norwegian striker then signed for Villa on the same day as Ashley Young - with both going on to become cult heroes in claret and blue.

2008-09

Carew's season in claret and blue was not without incident.

He scored the club's first goal of the season in the 2-2 away draw in Odense before bagging the club's first Barclays Premier League goal in the 4-2 win over Manchester City.

He then scored his second league goal against Stoke as MON's men went on to lose 3-2, with Mamady Sidibe scoring a late winner.

He quickly added his third of the campaign in the 2-1 defeat of West Brom at the Hawthorns.

He scored again in a comprehensive 4-0 victory at Wigan Athletic. He also scored the winning goal in the UEFA Cup clash at Slavia Prague before being struck down with a troublesome back injury.

MON signed Emile Heskey during Carew's period on the sidelines but the man mountain came roaring back in the closing months of the season.

He scored against CSKA Moscow, Stoke, Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton, Hull and Middlesbrough as he finished the season in style.
