Wilfred Bouma signed for Villa in August 2005 for £3.5m.
The versatile left-back, who can also play in the centre, came through the academy at PSV Eindhoven and originally started out as a striker.
He then switched to the left side of midfield before a further switch to central defence.
He won the Dutch title with PSV four times, in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005, the Amster Cup twice in 1996 and 2005 and the Johan Cruyff Shield four times in 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2003.
Bouma struggled to establish himself initially at Villa Park, as his debut season was heavily tarnished with injuries.
However, when Martin O'Neill replaced David O'Leary, Bouma - after recovering from a hamstring problem - slotted in brilliantly at full-back. Under O'Neill, Bouma flourished as he established himself as first choice left-back.
This led to Bouma becoming a cult hero, most notably for his strong tackling and determined approach in defence.
He even managed a goal in February 2008 with his unfamiliar right foot as he scored in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle.
2008-09
Bouma endured a frustrating season in claret and blue - as a serious injury marred the popular star's progress.
In the second leg of the UEFA Cup clash with Odense, Bouma dislocated his ankle after a tackle on forward Baye Djiby Fall.
He initially hoped to be back in training in October 2008 but he eventually resumed light sessions in January 2009.
Martin O'Neill's faith in the importance of Bouma was demonstrated when the manager handed the injured star a new two-year deal at Villa Park in September 2008.
He eventually returned to action in the 4-3 reserve win over Chelsea in March 2009 but after impressing in that clash, the Dutch left-back didn't play again that season.
He is now hoping to be back for when pre-season begins in July.
