England under-21 international Reo-Coker became Villa's first summer signing when Martin O'Neill snapped him up for an initial £7.5m from West Ham.
Reo-Coker began his career with Wimbledon, scoring six goals in 64 appearances for the Dons between 2002 and 2004, when he joined the Hammers - although his Premiership career could easily have started the previous year.
In March 2003, Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp agreed a deal to take him to Fratton Park ahead of Pompey's promotion to the top flight. Reo-Coker even signed a contract with Portsmouth but he ended up staying at Wimbledon because of financial problems.
Following his move to Upton Park the following January, he quickly established himself as a first team regular and was made club captain, helping Alan Pardew's team to promotion via the play-offs.
Twelve months later, he led the Hammers to the FA Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Liverpool.
Last season was less successful, the Hammers only avoiding relegation on the final day, although Reo-Coker's record of 160 league appearances and 11 goals indicate his considerable input at Upton Park.
He made his under-21 debut in 2003 and was captain for this summer's European Championship finals. He was also the first player to captain an England side at the new Wembley Stadium, in the 3-3 draw against Italy under-21s in March.
