When it comes to professionalism, Olof Mellberg has few peers. The defensive giant is always a tower of strength at the back. His strong tackling and sense of anticipation make him one of the most reliable defenders in the top flight.

Mellberg joined Villa in July 2001 from Racing Santander in a £5.6m deal. He made his Villa debut against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in August 2001.

His other previous clubs include Dagefors and AIK Stockholm.

Last Season

The Swedish international stood down as skipper to make way for Gareth Barry at the start of the season but it didn't make a scrap of difference to his input.

If anything, being relieved of the captaincy arguably enhanced his level of performance as he maintained the consistency which has been his trademark since his arrival from Spanish club Racing Santander six years ago.

He was in the starting line-up for every Premiership match, missing only the second half against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Boxing Day and the only game from which he was totally absent was the third round FA Cup-tie at Manchester United, when he was serving a one-match suspension.

Mellberg also had the satisfaction of being the first player to score a competitive goal at the new Emirates Stadium when he headed Villa into the lead in the 1-1 opening day draw against Arsenal.

Ironically, that was his only goal of the campaign but his defending was as reliable as ever.
