Olly's Euro Dream
Olof Mellberg aims to sign-off on a high at West Ham tomorrow and believes it will be a 'fantastic achievement' if Villa can qualify for Europe.
A win at West Ham coupled with a Newcastle victory at Everton would see Villa into the UEFA Cup. Otherwise Martin O'Neill's men must match or better Everton's result at Birmingham City to qualify for the Intertoto Cup.
And Mellberg, who played in Villa's last UEFA Cup outing - against Croatian outfit NK Varteks seven years ago - is determined to end his Claret and Blue career in style.
He said: "This is a big game for me, my last one and, who knows, it could be big for Villa too. We are still in it for that fifth spot. It's a big game in that aspect.
"We would probably have taken sixth at the start of the season, knowing how tough the Premiership has been the last few years.
"A lot of teams are looking to get those spots just behind the big four. They have challenged and really strengthened their squads by spending a lot of money. So the league is really tough and fifth and sixth spots are hard to get.
"It would be fantastic for Villa to get into Europe. That is the goal we have had. Ever since I came to the club we have wanted to be up there challenging on a regular basis."
The hugely popular Swede continued: "I've said before that I haven't really been obsessed with playing in Europe, but I would really like to have taken Villa there.
"That's a huge achievement in itself, taking a club into Europe through the Premiership, which is probably the strongest league in the world at the moment. It is stronger than ever.
"Knowing how many teams are challenging and looking at the teams behind us, it will be a good season. But finishing fifth would be fantastic.
"Whatever happens on Sunday we have had a good season. We have had some really great results, especially scoring 15 goals in the three recent wins. That was really something and hadn't happened before in my career here."
