Thursday Update
ITV Sport: Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill will hold further talks with Liverpool target Gareth Barry after Sunday's final Premier League clash of the season against West Ham. O'Neill has held an initial discussion with the Villa skipper, who has been the subject of a player-plus-cash offer from the Reds. But the two top-flight clubs have agreed to put further dialogue aside as O'Neill's team attempt to secure a UEFA Cup spot with victory over the Hammers and hope Everton slip up against Newcastle. "I've spoken to Gareth and we will have further discussions when the season is over," O'Neill said. "He felt himself that he had been affected by the speculation. "He felt it had affected his own game a little bit. He wouldn't want that to happen again with such an important game coming up on Sunday so we will speak again next week."
Express & Star: Villa Reserves included Wayne Routledge, Marlon Harewood and Shaun Maloney - but it wasn't enough to deny Liverpool the FA Premier Reserve League title last night. Goals from Krisztian Nemeth, Jordy Brouwer and Lucas clinched the national crown on a frustrating night for Kevin MacDonald's Southern champions at Anfield.
Birmingham Mail: Randy Lerner's quest for more corporate seating in the best seats at Villa Park - the centre of the Trinity Road Stand - have moved towards fruition with the announcement of hospitality packages and prices. Michael Cunnah has been looking to bring in more revenue and will be aided by the request to 400 supporters to vacate their seats and the shifting of press facilities to the wings. A new area will include fine dining and carvery restaurants, as well as a contemporary lounge bar. Four packages are available - Directors (£7,000), McGregors (£4,750), Trinity (£3,500) and 82 Lounge (£2,700).
Birmingham Mail: Martin O'Neill says Villa head to West Ham this Sunday "with plenty to play for" but he admits that a Blackburn win at Blues could leave them with nothing. Villa need three points at Upton Park and a Newcastle win at Everton to finish fifth and in the UEFA Cup places. But Mark Hughes' side could pip them to sixth and the one InterToto spot if they slip up."If we finish in the top six, we will get into the InterToTo", said O'Neill. "We are going into this game on Sunday still with a possibility of finishing in fifth and still with the possibility of not making the InterToto."So we have lots to play for and that's really the focus."
Birmingham Mail: Villa have been quoted wage demands of £80,000 a week if they want to sign Peter Crouch. That's how much sources say Portsmouth are willing to offer the Liverpool striker to return south. Villa would consider Crouch in a deal to take him back to Villa Park - but not at the expense of losing Liverpool target Gareth Barry. The wage demands Villa are encountering - plus the huge incentives likely to be needed to persuade Barry to stay - have left boss Martin O'Neill and chairman Randy Lerner considering smashing the wage structure to compete for top players. Barry is currently Villa's top earner on around £42,000 a week.
Sporting Life: Martin O'Neill has warned Aston Villa need to add more quality to the squad just to avoid going backwards after two seasons of progression. Villa are still challenging for a UEFA Cup spot going into the final weekend of the campaign despite having the smallest squad in the Barclays Premier League. But O'Neill is aware they cannot afford to stand still and need to invest in new blood for the 2008-2009 campaign. The former Celtic boss said: "I want to really keep the progress going. We want to try and step forward again and we're looking to add that extra quality to the quality that we have."
