Tuesday Papers
Sun: Aston Villa, Sunderland and Middlesbrough have all been warned off making a move for Sheffield United striker James Beattie.
Independent: Liverpool are winning the battle to sign Gareth Barry with the player himself having made the decision to sign for Rafael Benitez's club this summer rather than agree a new contract at Aston Villa. Benitez is also close to signing the Birmingham City goalkeeper Maik Taylor as a back-up to Jose Reina. The deal for the Aston Villa captain is set to prove the most complicated with the two clubs still at loggerheads over a fee, but Barry's wishes will, in all likelihood, force Villa into doing a deal eventually. The offer from Liverpool for Barry was valued at £10m although it was not an exclusively cash deal. In exchange for Barry, Liverpool were offering a choice of John Arne Riise, Jermaine Pennant or Scott Carson, who is currently on loan to Villa, plus an unspecified cash deal to make the value up to £10m. Barry has two years left of his contract at Villa and would become the side's highest earner should he accept the deal on offer to him. However, he has decided after 11 years at Villa that a move to Anfield would be in his best interests even though he is likely to be asked by Benitez to fulfil a role on the left side of midfield and defence rather than in the centre - where he has established himself for England. O'Neill dismissed the offer for Barry, which was faxed by Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry on Friday, as a "mish-mash of player exchanges concerning unnamed players". Unfortunately from Villa's perspective, the Liverpool player they would really like, Peter Crouch, who is out of contract next summer, was not among the players eventually offered to them in part-exchange.
Independent: The striker John Carew hopes teammate Gareth Barry will resist overtures from Liverpool and remain at Villa Park next season. "I think Gareth will stay, Villa is in his heart," the 28-year-old Norwegian said of the Villa captain. "I feel he will stay here and hopefully we can offer him a platform."
Sun: PATRIK BERGER has told Gareth Barry to jump at the chance of joining Liverpool. Aston Villa skipper Barry tops Rafa Benitez's summer shopping list. And Berger, who played for the Reds from 1996 to 2003, reckons his Villa team-mate would be mad to turn down a move to Anfield. The Czech midfielder, 34, said: "If I was in Gareth's position I would go there tomorrow. "It is the opportunity of a lifetime ? Liverpool don't come after you every year. "He is the heart of our team and it would be a massive challenge for him. "I'm not surprised they want to sign him. He has had a fantastic season and was our main player from the beginning to the end."
Sun: JOHN ARNE RIISE has been told he can find another club. The Liverpool full-back scored a late own goal in the Champions League semi-final, first-leg with Chelsea. And he was called into a meeting with boss Rafa Benitez following their exit from the competition last week. Riise, 27, is said to have reacted angrily at being axed. He was offered to Aston Villa in a possible switch which would take Gareth Barry to Anfield.
Times: John Carew is hopeful that Gareth Barry, the captain, will remain at Villa Park next season. "Villa is in his heart," the Norway striker said. "I feel he will stay and hopefully we can offer him the platform. I just hope he stays."
Sporting Life: Aston Villa central defender Curtis Davies has insisted he will be ready for a playing comeback ahead of schedule by the beginning of September. Villa manager Martin O'Neill is treading cautiously in terms of when Davies will be able to return from the ruptured Achilles tendon suffered against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in early March. He believes November is a more feasible deadline for Davies to contemplate being back in the picture. Davies understands O'Neill's viewpoint but is adamant he will be available shortly after the start of the 2008-09 campaign. The former West Brom player said: "I think from the gaffer's point of view he has got to think the worst case scenario because, if I'm not back until October-November time, then he might need someone else to fill in. "That is fair enough, I can understand those comments. But I'm positive and strong minded and I know I'm going to work really hard in the summer to get back. "I'm still aiming for that late August-early September time to start playing again - whether it is playing in the reserves or the first team."
Irish Independent: Liverpool are winning the battle to sign Gareth Barry, with the player himself having already decided to sign for Rafael Benitez's club this summer rather than agree a new contract at Aston Villa. Benitez is also close to signing Birmingham City goal-keeper Maik Taylor as a back-up to Jose Reina for next season, while Borussia Dortmund full-back Philip Degen will move to Anfield on a free transfer. Liverpool and Villa are still at loggerheads over a fee for the England midfielder, but Barry's wishes will almost certainly force Villa into doing a deal. Liverpool's offer for Barry has been valued at £10m although it is not an exclusively cash deal. In exchange for Barry, Liverpool are offering a choice of John Arne Riise, Jermaine Pennant or Scott Carson, who is currently on loan at Villa, plus an unspecified cash deal to make the value up to £10m.
Sky Sports: Porto right-back Jose Bosingwa has not agreed terms with Manchester United, according to the player's agent. United are reportedly tracking the defender, whose club confirmed last Friday that it would not consider any offer less than 20million euros (£15.7million) for the star. Bosingwa's agent, Rui Neno confirmed he has had contact with some English clubs, but insists Aston Villa are not among them. "Yes, but I prefer to keep quiet as it would be unpleasant to name those clubs' names now," he continued. "I just have to say that Aston Villa are not among those clubs. "I have no idea where these suggestions [of Villa interest] came from. I have never been contacted by anyone from Aston Villa. "It does not seem to me that the player would be interested to sign for Aston Villa, with all respect to the club. He would match up to a Champions League side."
