Mirror: Candidates to Lead England - Gareth Barry. Leadership: Skippered Villa for two seasons and also led David Platt's under-21s. Martin O'Neill is a huge admirer of his qualities. Commitment: Knows how to put his foot in when required but he rarely overcomitts and keeps onside with refs. Experience: England debut in 2000 and played under six international bosses yet less than 20 caps.

Mirror: Adam Phillip gave Roman Abramovich a boost last night by helping Chelsea reach the FA Youth Cup final. Substitute Phillip scored the winner in a stormy clash at Villa Park to set-up a two-legged final with Manchester City after the first leg ended 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Harry Forrester gave Villa the perfect start before Sergio Tejera Rodriguez and Gael Kaku put the Blues ahead. Forrester made it 2-2 but Phillip sealed it. Chelsea's Lee Sawyer and Villa's Matthew Roome were both sent off.

Birmingham Post: Tony McAndrew saw Villa's FA Youth Cup dreams end in heartbreaking fashion at Villa Park as Chelsea secured a 4-3 aggregate semi-final win. Two goals from Harry Forrester were not enough as the Young Lions lost 3-2 on the night in front of a crowd of almost 11,000 at Villa Park. Afterwards coach McAndrew said: "I think the lads did the whole club proud. They've been fantastic all season and I'm bitterly disappointed for them. "The second-half performance was really encouraging. We said at half-time that we didn't want to go out with a whimper. "We didn't do that. We played some great stuff and I think we were unlucky to go down 3-2. "Losing is a part of football you have to come to terms with. It's a terrible feeling - we need to remember that and make sure we don't feel that way too often.

Telegraph: Adam Phillip ensured that Roman Abramovic's stars of the future secured Chelsea's first participation in the FA Youth Cup final for 47 years, where they will face Manchester City, despite having Lee Sawyer sent off in disgrace at Villa Park last night. Chelsea's substitute striker rescued his team in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, with the equaliser a week ago, and he made another instant impact from the substitutes' bench last night, scoring with virtually his first touch. Chelsea have not reached the final since beating Everton in 1961, but their success was particularly harsh on Villa's England under-19 international Harry Forrester, who did all he could to drag his team into the final. The teenager signed from Watford for a fee that could rise to £2 million opened the scoring after four minutes with a wonderfully hit long-range effort and equalised with a perfectly guided shot from an acute angle after two goals in five minutes swung the tie in Chelsea's favour.

Times: Martin O'Neill, denying FC Porto's claim that Aston Villa have made a renewed bid to sign José Bosingwa, the Portugal right back, believes that this season will be a failure if the club do not secure a top-six place in the Barclays Premier League and qualify for Europe. Pinto da Costa, the Porto president, has reacted to reports that Manchester United are interested in signing Bosingwa by claiming that he had only received an inquiry from Villa about the player. O'Neill has made no secret of his plans to strengthen his squad in the summer and a right back will be among his priorities, but the Villa manager says that he has not been in contact with Porto for a year and is surveying other options. Nedum Onuoha, the Manchester City defender, is believed to be one potential target. "We have made no bid whatsoever," O'Neill said. "That doesn't mean we're not interested in players, but I know this story is definitely regurgitation because no one from Villa has spoken to anyone from Porto in the last nine months. This is a categorical denial from me; it's as simple as that because we haven't spoken to anyone."

ITV Football: Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has strongly denied claims that he had approached Porto for Jose Bosingwa. The Portuguese side's president Pinto da Costa claimed that he had rebuffed an approach from Villa, after rumours that Manchester United were interested in the player had started doing the rounds. Da Costa said Villa had been turned down because Bosingwa was not for sale. O'Neill has made it clear that he plans to make strategic additions to his squad this summer, but insists that Bosingwa is not part of those plans. The Villa boss claims he has not been in contact with Porto for the best part of a year and is looking at options elsewhere. He told the club's official website: "We have made no bid whatsoever. It's not true. "That doesn't mean we're not interested in players. I know this story is definitely a regurgitation because no-one from Villa has spoken to anyone from Porto in the last nine months. "This is a categorical denial from me; it's as simple as that because we haven't spoken to anyone."
