Five Star Villa
Two members of the Claret and Blue Army take us back to a pre-Christmas cracker in December 1976, when Liverpool were hammered 5-1 at Villa Park.
Ken Watkins wrote: We entertained the then European Champions, Liverpool at Villa Park. The Holte was packed and I think before the kick off if someone had offered us the draw most of us would have taken it.
We were standing just to the right of the goal on the Holte and then came the result that no-one would have predicted before the game. I can't remember in which order our goals came but Andy Gray scored two, Dixie Deehan scored two and then Brian Little scored what I still to this day say was the best goal I ever saw at Villa Park, I don't know how far out he was but he curled an absolute beauty into the far left hand corner of the net from the right hand side of the box I can still see Ray Clemence clawing at thin air trying to stop it.
The thing that always mystified me about this game was a young man I think was called Charlie Young played centre half that night (I don't know if Chris Nichol was injured or suspended) but I can't ever recall him playing for the first team again.
Unfortunately for the Holte Enders all the goals came in the first half and the only one towards us was scored by Ray Kennedy just before half time to make the score Aston Villa 5 Liverpool 1.
PS Every time Andy Gray got the ball that night Emlyn Hughes and Phil Thompson shot a brick and they were the two mainstays of the England defence no wonder we never qualified for the World Cup or European championships during the seventies.
NB: Charlie Young went on to make 11 appearances for Villa before joining Gillingham.
James Lloyd also recalled this unforgettable match. He wrote: Like a lot of fans, I've always loved night games in the middle of winter. There's something really special about watching a game under floodlights in freezing cold temperatures. This match is probably the reason why I still get a buzz going to night games.
Liverpool were the top team in the country and travelled to Villa Park expecting the two points. I think they travelled everywhere expecting to win back then.
But as a nine-year-old Villa fanatic, I was equally convinced we could beat them. My son currently goes to school with loads of Man Utd fans and back then, the glory-hunters supported Liverpool. They weren't even going to Villa Park for the match, but I knew I'd get plenty of stick if they beat us.
I needn't have worried. This was one of those games where Villa could do no wrong. Liverpool clearly didn't know what had hit them.
We were one-up within ten minutes as Andy Gray headed past Ray Clemence. John Deehan, who should have gone on to become a Villa legend, made it 2-0 and then 3-0. I don't think we could believe what we were seeing. By the time Brian Little made it 4-0 I was already rehearsing my chants in the playground the following morning.
Liverpool did pull one back, but Andy Gray finished what he had started as he headed home a cross from the left to make it 5-1 at half-time. I had visions of double figures, but as is so often the case, the second-half was tame by comparison and that was the end of the scoring.
Still I gave the glory-hunters plenty of stick for weeks after that and I'm sure they never remind their kids (Man Utd fans I suppose) of this game. I never stop telling my lad about it!
