Pele

Michael Glynn wrote: I remember the night we played Pele`s Santos, my mate and myself decided it would be a good opportunity to take our then girlfriends to Villa Park and introduce them to our beloved team.

We set out from Sutton in plenty of time but on reaching the Tyburn Road the traffic was at a standstill so we decided to ditch the car and walk from Tyburn Road to the ground.

Unfortunately the two girls weren`t wearing sensible footwear, so by the time we arrived blisters were a plenty and the two girls spent the entire game moaning about the return journey.

Needless to say neither girl ever returned to Villa Park again, and have no recollection of ever seeing the great Pele at all.

Pele

There were so many Villa fans that when we were queuing I put my hand in my pocket to get my cigarettes and couldn't get my hand out again for twenty minutes (and this was outside on the road)!Inside we were actually lifted up off our feet and were carried along with the crush of people.

Pele only played for one half, he scored from a free kick that bent around and dipped under Jimmy Cumbes' bar. It was the first time we had seen someone take a free kick in this way. He tried again later from the other side, but this time Jimmy was equal to it. We beat Santos 2 - 1 and went home happy but very tired.
